St. Gertrude the Great (1256–1302) was a Benedictine nun and mystic known for her deep love of Jesus Christ and her profound spiritual writings. Living in the monastery of Helfta in Germany, she experienced a rich life of prayer and visions, especially centered on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her spirituality emphasized God’s mercy, personal intimacy with Christ, and a tender devotion to the Eucharist.

St. Gertrude is especially remembered for promoting prayers for the souls in purgatory and for her confidence in God’s compassion. Her writings, including The Herald of Divine Love, have inspired generations of Catholics to grow in trust and devotion. As the patroness of this parish, she serves as a model of prayer, humility, and a deep, personal relationship with Christ.
